Department Mailing of Surplus Lines Notices; Notice No. 1996-08

   Effective this date, the Insurance Department (Department) will cease individual mailings to surplus lines agents for notices relevant to the surplus lines marketplace, ending our former practice. Notices relevant to the surplus lines marketplace will now be available from the following sources: (1)  the Pennsylvania Bulletin, and (2)  the Pennsylvania Surplus Lines Association (Association).

   Questions concerning a subscription to the Pennsylvania Bulletin should be addressed to Fry Communications, Inc., 800 Church Road, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055-3198, telephone in-State [phone], ext. 340, and out-of-State [phone], ext. 340.

   Under section 1611 of the Insurance Company Law (40 P. S. § 991.1611), the Department has the discretion of contracting with a surplus lines advisory organization to render advice and assistance in carrying out the purposes of Article XVI of the Insurance Company Law (40 P. S. § 991.1601 et seq.). The Insurance Department is in final stages of contracting with the Association to perform the functions of an advisory organization. The Association will disseminate future surplus lines notices after execution of the contract. We will provide you with notice once that contract has been executed and supply the address and telephone number of the Association at that time. In the interim, the only notices which this Department will mail to Pennsylvania licensed surplus lines agents are those required under section 1607 of the Insurance Company Law (40 P. S. § 991.1607).

   Following is the Insurance Department's Eligible Surplus Lines Insurer List current as of May 8, 1996. Future lists will be prepared semiannually and published about January 1 and July 1 each year.
